GENERAL INFORMATION

School Hours

Rivers Elementary School operates on a six day cycle consistent with Rolling River School Division.  The hours are as follows:
Office Hours: 8:30 a.m. ~ 4:00 p.m. daily
School Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Daily Scheduled Times (am & pm)
Classes Begin: 9:00 a.m. Classes Begin: 12:45 p.m.
Morning Recess: 9:55 a.m. ~ 10:10 a.m. & 10:20 a.m. ~ 10:35 a.m.
Afternoon Recess: 1:55 p.m. ~ 2:10 p.m. & 2:20 p.m. ~ 2:35 p.m.
Noon Dismissal: 11:45 a.m. Dismissal: 3:30 p.m.
Parents are urged NOT to send their children to school before 8:30 a.m.  This is because there is NO SUPERVISION prior to that time.  During the colder winter months, we ask that students, whenever possible, not to arrive at school prior to 8:45 a.m.  This is due to the fact that students remain outside until 8:50 a.m. and this will lessen the time students are outside.

ATTENDANCE

We have an automatic call out/email for our school attendance.  If a student is absent and we have not received notification from home as to why, an automatic computer notification system will call/email at 9:30 am and 1:20 pm every day.  If you are aware of an absence, please call in and let us know.  The system will begin by calling the main contact number and then work through other phone numbers and finally will send an email notifying you of the absence.  We have moved to this system to ensure that all calls/emails are done in a timely and efficient manner to ensure student safety.

Absences from class can detrimentally affect the child’s academic progress.  Please attempt to book appointments with your child outside of school hours whenever possible.  If it is necessary to book the appointment, please make arrangements to check in with the secretary and pick your child up at the school office.

BEHAVIOURAL EXPECTATIONS

At Rivers Elementary, we believe in the important of fostering a respectful and caring community.  In doing so, each teacher will be responsible for teaching and maintaining behaviour management skills which are consistent with the school and division model.  Teachers have flexibility to manage their classes in a way that is in keeping with their beliefs and style.  This will cover minor infractions and consequences will be applied by the classroom teacher.

Major infractions, include (but not limited to):
Students who are in a serious fight (with intent to harm)
Students swears directly at an adult
Student continues to display non-compliant, defiant behaviours after classroom interventions have been exhausted

Students involved in major infractions are subject to any of the consequences outlined in the RRSD “Behaviour Management” policy.

COMMUNICATION

Communication between the school and home is very important for the success of a student.  The school needs to share a variety of information with families and parents should have the opportunity to ask questions and respond with regards to the welfare of his/her child.  Please take note of monthly newsletters, parent/teacher conferences and reports, open house, concerts, school website, and notes home.  If a parent has a concern with regards to behaviour or academics, it is recommended the parent first contact the teacher and if not satisfied, then speak with an administrator.  In almost all instances, problems are resolved when communication is immediate and direct.
Most school notes/letters are emailed to parents.  If we do not have your email address and would like to receive information via email, please submit your email address to the office.

LUNCH EXPECTATIONS

Students who stay for lunch are required to be in the classroom from 11:45 a.m. – 12:10 p.m. unless permission is given by the duty teacher.  Lunch recess begins at 12:15 p.m.  During this time, students are expected to be outside unless a note due to illness or the teacher permission is given.  Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for weather conditions as children will NOT be permitted to re-enter the school during any recesses.

The canteen will be open from 11:45 a.m. – 11:55 a.m.  Hot lunches will be available occasionally.  Please note that the canteen is provided for a snack but not for a complete lunch.  Parents are expected to send a lunch on a daily basis.

Town students who wish to stay for lunch must notify the teacher of the reason with a note from the parents.  Extended dates need to be indicated in the note as well.

Parents must inform the school is the child needs to leave the school grounds during lunch when he/she is permitted to be there in all circumstances.

LOCKER USE

Grade three to six students assigned to lockers may use them outside of regular class time and with teacher permission.  Students are responsible for locking their locker each day.  Lockers must be kept clean without anything left above lockers.  Revealing locker combinations and entering others’ lockers without permission may result in loss of locker use.

Students are welcome to supply the OWN LOCKS for their lockers.

SCHOOL SAFETY

Rivers Elementary purposely plans for the safety of our students in and around the building.  These plans include:
1. Emergency Preparedness ~ fire, dangerous intruder, lockdown, and evacuation drills.  Please note:  Following a drill (other than fire), an information note will be sent home.
2. Student Supervision ~ students are supervised twenty-five minutes before school and fifteen minutes after school as well as recesses throughout the day.
3. Building ~ visitors are identified through the office, dismissal alternate to regular time is monitored through the office and volunteers participate in a criminal check.

In the event of a school emergency closure, students will be walked to Riverdale Community Centre where they will be accommodated until parents are able to pick them up or dismissal time.  If children have to go home, be sure your child knows where to go if you are not at home.

                             MEDICAL ADMINISTRATION
